The “HOW” in business and life

Following on from the “WHY”

In my last blog I shared with you my “WHY” and how Simon Sinek believes Golden Circlethat starting with “WHY” is pivotal to our business and personal longevity and success. Simon Sinek also discussed that for you to realise your “WHY” you need to have your “Golden Circle” (which I mentioned in my previous blog – “WHY”, “HOW” and “WHAT”) working together.

My next step in the process to achieving my “Golden Circle” was to identify my “HOW”, which is the ‘process’ part of the “Golden Circle”. “HOW” is the actions we take to realise our “WHY” and therefore everything you say and do should be consistent with your “WHY”.

I will briefly share with you my “HOW’s” which are fairly genetic in description, but these are my foundations on “HOW” I am going to achieve my “WHY”:-

  • Continue to grow my connections/network by reaching out to people, being interactive at events and using social media,
  • Develop my leadership skills to be the best leader I can be by reading and evaluating books and personal development sessions,
  • Develop my communication skills to help me grow my connections/network and to effectively communicate my professional opinion by reading and evaluating books and personal development sessions,
  • Continue to Learn everyday and listen to those people around me and,
  • Evaluate my goals, achievements and losses daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly.

Businesses and the “HOW”

Simon believes most businesses know their “HOW” (the process) these are the processes that each business does day to day to deliver the goods or services they sell that differentiates their business. Take Apple’s for example “beautifully designed computers, simply to use and user friendly”.

Your “HOW” has to be consistent with your “WHY” to make the “golden circle” work, this will enable people to believe what you believe and fall in love with your product/service. It is important not to start with your “HOW” as Simon  believes starting with your “HOW” and working backwards to identify your “WHY” may not necessarily be enough to make the “WHY” powerful enough.

Needing Help with your “HOW” or “WHY”?

Simon Sinek believes that most successful entrepreneurs know their “WHY” but struggle to identify their “HOW” therefore they need those around them who know the “HOW” to be successful. A great example of this was Steve Jobs and his partnership with Steve Wozniak, at Apple. Steve Jobs identified their “WHY” but needed help from Wozniak to identify Apples’ “HOW” (mentioned above). Wozniak identified what their processes needed to be to achieve their “WHY”, this was a match made in heaven.

I believe in small to medium businesses and personally this partnership may not always be needed but I do believe at times there is a need for coaches, mentors and professionals to assist you in any process you may need help with including help to identify your “WHY” “HOW” and “WHAT” in that quest for success.

In my next blog I will share with you my “What’s” which is the final step in the ‘Golden Circle’ and they are the realisation of our “How’s”.
